Program Descriptions

Wool • August 28

Begin our harvest series with something other than food – sheep wool! Learn about how wool we get from sheep is turned into yarn. Hear a story about spinning wool and make a yarn related craft. Then go visit the farm to see how wool is spun and help clean some wool from our sheep.

Hay • September 4

Hey, hey, hay is for more than just horses. Come hear a fun story about hay and make a craft. Afterwards visit the Horsepower farm and help with a hay related chore.

 Apples & Pears • September 11

Apples and pears; pears and apples!  From pies to juicy fruit, you can eat apples and pears in many different ways.  But do you know how an apple or a pear grows?  How do apples and pears  become pies?  Learn all about these fruits as you hear stories, make a craft, and pick your own apples or pears from the trees at the 1900 Farm.

Pumpkins & Squash: Things That Grow on Vines • September 18

pumpkins and squash sitting on grass

All pumpkins are squash but not all squash are pumpkins!  Learn the difference between the two and how they grow.  Stories will set the stage for the craft we do.  Then we’ll visit the farm to see how these are grown, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get to pick one to take home!

Corn • September 25

Hear a story about the crop that has been grown in Iowa for many, many years – corn! Make a corny craft to take home and visit one of our farms to see what they would have used corn for and help with a corn related chore at the farm.
