We mean it when we say “high-style”! In the 1870s, a dinner party was a chance to show that you had money—and that you knew the proper ways to spend it. Learn how Mrs. Ellen Flynn, the mistress of this mansion who was once a domestic servant herself, might have made an effort to impress others in Des Moines society. Take a seat in the elegant dining room and allow yourself to be waited on by servants in proper 1870s period clothing. Your host will share stories of Victorian entertaining while you enjoy nine courses presented in period style. Taste some of the unique staples of a Victorian meal while kitchen staff provide insights into 19th-century menu choices. After dinner, explore this historic Italianate home built on this site in 1870.
Recommended for ages 14 and up.
