Grades 2-3

Day in the Life of a Kid

Wednesday, December 29
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
What was daily life like for a kid in 1876? Explore what kids in 1876 did when they were at home, at school, at work, and in their free time. Hands-on activities, crafts, games, and visits to historic sites will bring to life daily routines of a child in 1876. Highlights: Try making molasses candy, make an old-fashioned doll, visit the Tangen Home, and go to school as they did in 1876.

Historic Holidays

Holidays are a way to celebrate the past. Explore how Queen Victoria influenced how we celebrate Christmas today. Is Halloween an American tradition? Discover the history through hands-on activities and visits to historic sites, and create crafts linked to these holidays. Highlights: Bake holiday cookies in a wood burning oven, make a garland, make a Valentine’s card.

Iowa Statehood

Wednesday, December 29
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846. Take a look at Iowa when it was admitted to the Union. Experience “pioneer life” in and around 1846 through hands-on activities, crafts, and visits to historic sites. Highlights: Build a 3-D log home, design and sew a quilt sampler, dip a candle.

Victorian Holidays

9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Europe influenced holidays we celebrate today. Many were brought to popularity during the Victorian Era. Have you ever heard of Boxing Day? Find out what it is and learn about the traditions of various other Victorian holidays through hands-on activities and visits to historic sites. Highlights: Bake gingerbread cookies, make a Jacob’s Ladder, visit the Print shop

Family Camp

Flynn Family

Best suited for school-age children 5 and older
Friday, December 31
9 a.m.-noon
Learn about the Flynn family with your own family. Compare the roles of parents, grandparents, and kids then and now. Learn how a baby would have been cared for, see what kinds of toys Victorian children would have and play with, and participate in proper 1876 etiquette by having a tea party.
