Behind the Scenes Tours

Take a guided tour of some of the hidden gems and historic treasures of Living History Farms. You’ll even pick up some tips for caring for your own heirloom objects!

Tours are 45 minutes in length and are offered select dates at these times: Thursdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 10am. Space is limited.

Historic Quilt ShowTextile Treasures Tour

Take a guided tour of Living History Farms textile storage facility and learn how you can better store your own textile treasures at home! Join us for this up close view of select historic quilts and clothing. These rarely seen gems are safely tucked away most of the year; explore the vault and take a peek at quilts, clothing, and hand work treasures! Discover why our museum collects certain textiles, but not others. Learn how these delicate objects are preserved and stored and what can cause them to decay. Gather tips and techniques for caring for your own heirloom textiles.

Photographs, paper documents, and heirloom objects such as tools or toys are in every closet and attic. How do we keep them for future generations? Why do we want to? Get a peek behind the scenes at Living History Farms’ storage facilities and discover the hidden treasures in our collection. Join us for a peek in the acid-free boxes and map shelves, which carefully house objects too fragile for everyday museum display. These rarely-seen gems are safely tucked away most of the year, but will be opened for our tour! Discover how even the most basic items can teach us about our past. This tour will inspire you to care and conserve your own heirlooms. Staff will share tips for preservation care you can easily do at home!

Custom Collections Tour

Custom tours can be reserved, as curator time allows. For a custom group time, reservation inquiries must be made 30 days in advance in order to ensure the collection staff can accommodate the group. The maximum guest number (12 guests) and age (12+) will still apply to custom reservations. To request a custom tour, please email jdennis@lhf.org at least 30 days in advance.
