Wishing for spring? Combat the winter blues with a look at the birds, bees, and flower patterns found in the Living History Farms’ historic textile collection. This special exhibit of historic quilts, clothing, handwork, and hats have been selected for their nature motifs and garden themes. Visit with craft and quilting demonstrators and explore hands-on textile activities for kids and adults. Learn from creative demonstrators and bring your own knitting or sewing projects to work on alongside museum crafters. Chat with plant and pollinator specialists and browse the MarketPlace Museum Store for supplies to start your own spring nature projects.


Demonstration and Class Schedule:

In addition to these time-limited events, there will be quilting and weaving demonstrations every afternoon of the show, February 14-16 and 21-23.
  • Friday, February 15, 12-2pm – Crochet demonstration.
  • Friday, February 15, 2-3 pm – “Learn to Hand Quilt” high contrast quilting with Riane Menardi Morrison, learn the basics of hand quilting on modern quilts. Riane will demonstrate her unique high-contrast hand quilting method with sashiko thread, and attendees can try it for themselves. Attendees will be able to purchase materials and patterns to continue quilting at home. This is a free drop-in class for 8-10 students.
  • Saturday, February 16, 12-1pm – “Weaving from the Heart” Weaving, realize it or not is often the heart of our homes and lives. By weaving from our hearts we can bring life, personality, and love into our every day lives in the same way our ancestors have for tens of thousands of years. This short class is meant to help connect and introduce you to weaving with ease; showing how you can spring-board yourself into your own unique creations – no matter how precise or how free-form. So that you can create right from your heart to the hands of your loved ones. This is a free drop-in class.
  • Saturday, February 16, 12:30-2pm – Tatting demonstration.
  • Saturday, February 16, 2-4pm – Crochet demonstration.
  • Friday, February 22, 12-12:45pm – “Our Love of 1930s Quilts” lecture, Karen of Creekside Quilts, During a dark and dreary era, where there was fear and hardship everywhere, blossoms the art of quilting for all economic incomes. Explore with me what made the 1930’s quilts so popular, and continue to be popular today. Why are we so fascinated by the charm of the 1930’s quilts and generations later, still trying to replicate the charm and warmth from a not so charming era? This presentation will focus on the history of the 1930’s quilts and what makes them so intriguing.
  • Saturday, February 23, 2:00pm – “Learn How to English Paper Piece Hexi’s” class, Karen of Creekside Quilts, $7 cost. In this class, we will learn how to piece together hexagons, using the English Paper Piecing technique. Fabric, thread, needles, and paper piecing hexagons will be provided, please bring with you sewing scissors and a seam ripper.

Save money when you get your tickets in advance online. Tickets go on sale January 15 at 10am and will be available through February 13 at noon. Tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets required for everyone 2 years and older. Children 1 and under are free. While the museum is not open for touring during this event, collections docents will be present and artifacts from our historic textiles collection will be on display in the Visitor Center. Living History Farms will open for the general season on May 1, 2019.
