Transform Living History Farms from a seasonal attraction to a year-round destination. Total goal: $6.2 million
Living History Farms’ annual economic impact on the community will grow by an estimated $1 million, from the current $5.9 million to $6.9 million. This will generate an estimated $200,000 in annual hotel/motel taxes, nearly $300,000 in state tax revenue, and more than $800,000 in federal taxes.* We will offer expanded programming throughout the winter, when guests cannot tour our historic sites, most of which have no HVAC, electricity, or running water.
* Estimates derived using the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 Calculator from Americans for the Arts
As Iowa’s premier “agri-cultural” museum, Living History Farms teaches guests about the significant role agriculture has played in the development of our nation. However, our current climate-controlled indoor space is inadequate to meet growing community demand for “off-season” programming and to house traveling exhibits that connect our historical offerings with contemporary farming practices and issues. Living History Farms must expand our capacity to meet population growth and Iowa’s tourism/economic development efforts. The Des Moines area’s population grew 18.6 percent from 2010 to 2021, making it the fastest-growing metro area by percentage in the Midwest.** Year-round facilities and programs are needed to meet the growing demands and changes in our community.

FEH Architectural Firm and the Ball Team have been contracted to design and build the following:
The Cultivation Center will more than double the modern indoor space at the front of our museum campus while adding an exhibit hall, family restrooms, adult changing stations, and a mother’s room.
The current Visitor Center will be converted to a Learning Center for teachers/schools, students, day campers, and youth groups, with flexible classroom and program spaces, allowing educational programs to expand to year-round offerings.
The Picnic Pavilion and connecting courtyard will feature picnic tables, a firepit area, and outdoor program areas.
