Nancy Lavender-Bobenhouse, a Des Moines native, is a graduate of Grand View University and Drake University. She and her husband Steve Bobenhouse own Fitness Sports Ltd., a running specialty store in Windsor Heights which he founded in 1984. Their business is focused on running, walking, swimming, and triathlons. She is a past-president of the Capital Striders Running Club where they were founding members.
Together they founded the Central Iowa Race Corporation as a non-profit company to administer fund-raising race activities. The Living History Farms Race which they direct is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year and is the largest cross-country race in North America. It is now limited to 7,500 participants. This event not only contributes to the Farms, but helps fund scholarships and also assists several other area non-profit organizations and youth programs.
She is involved in coordinating many area running events such as the Dam to Dam Race, WHAMM, the Governor’s Cup, and Midnight Madness.
Nancy serves on the Grand View University National Alumni Council and is a past recipient of their Volunteer Service Award. She is also a frequent volunteer for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She is a member of the Des Moines Art Center, the Civic Center, and the Des Moines Playhouse and enjoys spending time watercolor painting or with her two dogs on the trail.
