“Living History Farms has historical accuracy, appealing activities, a dedicated staff, and a variety of opportunities for volunteers, and for me, the irresistible chance to visit the past.”

Those are comments by two of our volunteers that have contributed their time and talents to our museum. The combination of our committed volunteers and skilled employees, make for one of the finest agricultural museums in the world.

We often are asked, “Do you need to have a history degree to volunteer?”, or “Do I have to come from a farm background?” No, you don’t. What you need is a willingness to learn. So, don’t be shy, contact us!

The majority of volunteer positions with LHF are available from May 1st through the middle of October. Other “behind-the-scenes” positions are also available all year long. We offer a wide variety of experiences and time commitments, and we welcome the involvement of families and groups of people who want to have a fun time together.

We offer two avenues to participate in our program.

1. ) Short-term or one-time opportunities such as:
   April 11th: Family Easter Party

   Oct. 22-25, 28-30: Family Halloween

   Throughout the year: Maintenance and grounds projects

   ) On-going positions:

   INTERPRETIVE: This is the opportunity for you to be a historical interpreter; teaching and educating the public in the history of Midwestern agriculture and rural life. You will receive written materials and on-going training. Period clothing is provided. The majority of these positions require a 16 hour per month commitment. We have openings at the following: 1700 Ioway Farm, 1900 Farm, Doctor’s Office, Flynn House, Law Office, Implement Dealership, Drug Store, Blacksmith Shop, General Store, Broom Shop, Print Shop, Bank, Millinery Shop, and Church.

   DAY CAMP PROGRAM: We have a very popular summer Day Camp Program for children. Teens that are at least 13 years old by June 1st, in combination with college interns, supervise the daily activities. This would involve a minimum of coming out every day for one week during the summer. It’s fun! Apply in early spring!

   All junior counselor positions are filled for 2009

   VISITOR SERVICES: These positions include: garden work; office duties; various maintenance tasks, and orienting the general visitors and school groups to LHF.

Volunteers have been an integral part of LHF since our beginning in 1970. Not only do the special talents and commitment of our volunteers contribute to our success, but we also strive to give the volunteer a rewarding, exciting experience. Potential volunteers for on-going positions are interviewed so that a careful placement can be made, and benefits include: season admission pass, bi-weekly newsletter, opportunities to socialize with volunteer and employee staff, and a volunteer recognition dinner.
