PROGRAMS AT THE HISTORIC FARM SITES
A Farm Family Goes to Town
Experience life on a farm and then take a trip to town to see how farmers and townspeople relied upon each other for economic support. Students visit the 1900 Farm to learn about daily routines. Students will compile a list of supplies to purchase in town as they participate in outdoor chores, cook on a wood-burning stove, and do laundry. Students take a horse-drawn wagon ride to visit two of these three town buildings: the Greteman General Store, the Tangen Implement Warehouse, and/or the Matthias Blacksmith Shop. They will learn the services and supplies these buildings provided for a farm family. (Dress for a short ride in an open wagon.)
1900 Farm Hired Hands
Students participate in morning or afternoon chores at the 1900 Horse-Powered Farm. This includes cooking a snack on the wood-burning stove, doing laundry, and doing various farm-related chores. This program includes a horse-drawn wagon ride to the 1900 Farm. Dates for this extremely popular program go fast! Reserve your spot early!
1850 Farm Hired Hands
What was life like for new farmers in Iowa? Students visit the log house, new barn and see all of the farm animals—oxen, sheep, chickens and pigs. They help with morning or afternoon chores, bake a snack in the hearth and do seasonal activities appropriate for 1850.
PROGRAMS IN 1875 TOWN OF WALNUT HILL These "hands-on, hands-in" programs are designed to give students a unique learning experience about the history of rural life in Iowa. All enrichment programs require 3 adult chaperones, admitted at no charge.

A Visit to A One-Room School
Spelling bees, recitation, reading from McGuffey Readers and arithmetic problems on a slate are lessons students will participate in when they visit the one-room schoolhouse. Compare and contrast today’s classroom with that of our 1875 school.
A visit to the Flynns
How did the Victorians live? Spend some time at the Flynn House and learn about the daily life of a wealthy farm family and their domestic help. This hands-on program is loaded with activities and information about the Victorian era!
