Enrichment Programs

Enrichment programs are “hands-on, hands-in” programs designed to give students a unique learning experience about the history of farming and rural life in Iowa. All programs are 3 hours in length and require 3 adults, (teacher plus two additional adults), admitted free of charge.

Historic Farm Sites Programs

 

1900 Farm Hired Hands

Availability: FALL 2011: Weds–Sat, October 19 – December 17, 2011
                     SPRING 2012: Tues–Sat, March 27 – April 26, 2012
Fees: $9.00 per student; 18-25 students
Grades: 2-12
Description: Students participate in morning or afternoon chores at the 1900 Horse-Powered Farm. This includes cooking a snack on the wood-burning stove and various farm related chores. This program includes a horse-drawn wagon ride to and from the 1900 Farm.

1850 Farm Hired Hands

Availability: FALL 2011: Weds–Sat, October 19 – November 17, 2011
                     SPRING 2012: Tues–Sat, March 27 – April 26, 2012
Fees: $9.00 per student; 18-25 students
Grades: 2-12
Description: What was life like for farmers in Iowa in 1850? Students visit the log house, barn, and see all of the farm animals – oxen, sheep, chickens, and pigs – help with morning and afternoon chores, bake a snack in the hearth, and do appropriate seasonal activities.

1875 Town of Walnut Hill Programs

 

Visit to Town

Availability: Weds–Sat, October 19 – December 17, 2011. Last year for this program!
Fees: $9.00 per student; 18-25 students
Grades: 3-12
Description: Discover the types of businesses, services, and homes that are found in a typical Iowa farm town. Experience how changing technology impacts the goods and services available to townspeople through hands-on activities. Students spend time in three different town sites.

A Day in the Life of a Kid – 1875

Availability: Tues–Sat, March 27 – April 26, 2012
Fees: $9.00 per student; 18-25 students
Grades: 3-12
Description: What was it like for a child to grow up in a small Iowa town in 1875?  During this 3-hour program, your students will learn the answers to this question. They will experience the daily chores and games kids at the Tangen Family Home played, experience a few lessons in the one-room schoolhouse, and do chores typical of children and young adults at one of the local trade shops in the town of Walnut Hill.

Apprentices Needed

Availability: Tues–Sat, March 27 – April 26, 2012
Fees: $9.00 per student; 18-25 students
Grades: 3-12
Description: How did a person learn their job in 1875? The answer–they often apprenticed with a local tradesman. Your students will be apprentices at 3 of the trades buildings in the 1875 town of Walnut Hill. Experience firsthand the working conditions in the days before child labor laws.

Schoolhouse

Availability: Sept 1 – Oct 15, 2011: Weds – Thurs
                     Oct 19 – Dec 17, 2011: Weds – Sat
                     March 27 – April 26, 2012: Tues – Sat
                     May 1 – May 31, 2012: Mon – Thurs
Fees: $4.50 per student; 12-25 students
Grades: 3-12; can be adapted for homeschool families.
Description: Spelling bees, recitation, reading from McGuffey Readers and arithmetic problems on a slate are lessons students will do when they visit the one-room schoolhouse.
